Calvin Mattson

Personal

I've lived in Royal Oak for about 13 years. I grew up around mid-Michigan, then spent six years in St. Ignace, where I went to Lake Superior State and worked for the Mackinac Bridge. After college I did a stint in upstate New York near Syracuse before making my way back to Michigan for good. I like to understand how things work all the way down, and most of my free time goes into things I can build, grow, or play.

Off the clock

Music

I'm learning bass (usually tuned way down) and guitar. Metalhead at heart (Tool, Gojira, Chevelle), with a soft spot for Billy Strings. You'll find me at shows.

The garden

I'm turning my yard into native habitat: milkweed, liatris, asters, and a lot of buckthorn that's no longer there. Watching monarchs come through is the payoff.

The crew at home

Two dogs and two cats, and the pet hair to prove it.

The home lab

A server running a few dozen self-hosted services, including the one serving this page. My other nerdy habit is home automation: I'll happily spend hours getting the lights to turn on and off at exactly the right moment. Controls engineering habits die hard.

Race day

NASCAR is my favorite sport, and Carson Hocevar is my driver. It doesn't hurt that he's a Michigan guy.

Detroit, always

Red Wings, Lions, Tigers, and sometimes Pistons. Michigan football (and Michigan State). And yes, I'm getting back on a skateboard.
